Layering charms and pendants is a clever way to get a designer look. In this Beading Lesson, we’ll show you some fun ideas for creating your own boutique style designs using shell pendants with stainless steel charms and connectors.

Shell pendants are a popular way to add instant style to necklace projects. They come in a variety of styles and colors, so choose your favorite one to get started.

Next, you’ll need to decide how you’re going to attach the pendant to the center of your design. Some options include using a jump ring, a metal bail or a beaded bail. The type of attachment you choose will depend on the pendant hole and the look that you want the finished necklace to have.

Jump rings and metal bails work well for a variety of necklace styles, from chain to ribbon to single strands of beads. Keep in mind that if the orientation of the loop on the charm and the bail do not match, you may need to attach a jump ring to connect them to each other.

To use a pinch bail, place the pendant and charm inside the bail, and then squeeze the arms together with your fingers.

Multi-strand or chunkier necklaces look great with beaded bails. To make a beaded bail, cut a piece of beading wire, pass it through the pendant, charm, beads, and a crimp bead, and pass the other wire end through the crimp bead to form a ring. Crimp it and cut off any extra wire. The charm should be held in place securely in front of the shell pendant.

You can also add beaded dangles to a layered element. A chandelier earring or multi-strand connector component makes a fun addition to a shell pendant and allows you to add more interest at the center of the design.

Layering isn’t limited to pendants. It can also be a great effect for smaller dangles. Think about layering charms on top of smaller mother of pearl drops to enhance earring or bracelet designs. The charm is a great way to add a little designer touch to an otherwise simple design.
