Three Essential Knots
Designed by Katie Hacker

There are three basic knots that jewelry makers need to know to finish the ends of ribbon or cord, separate beads on a strand and attach pendants or other focal elements.

Overhand

1. Fold the cord in a loop.
2. Pass the ends through the loop and pull the ends to tighten the knot.
Tip: When making a knotted strand, be sure to tie the knots in the same direction so they lie more uniformly in the design.

Lark's Head

1. Fold the cord in half and pass the fold through a ring.
2. Bring the cord ends through the fold and pull it to tighten the knot.

Sliding Knot

1. Adjust the cord so the ends are facing in opposite directions, then tie one in an overhand knot around the other.
2. Tie the other end around the original strand with the end extending toward the front of the design.
