Twisted and Flattened Wire Ring

Tools:
Annealing Pan
Rolling Mill
Ring Mandrel
Drill Wire Twister
Diamond File set
Cool Cup
Max Flame Torch
Titanium Solder Pick
Chain nose and bent chain nose pliers
Bench Block Helper
Chasing Hammer
Bench Pin and Clamp
Copper Solder Paste
Ultra Polish Pads

Materials:
1 ft 18 g copper round wire
1 ft 16 g copper round wire
1 ft 14 g copper round wire

Steps

  1. Choose the desired gauge wire.  Cut 1 ft of wire, fold in half and twist in drill wire twister.
  2. Adjust the rollers on the rolling mill and inset the wire. Tighten the rollers so they grip the wire firmly. Turn the handle to move the rollers and advanced the wire through about 1” or so. Reverse the wire out and check the compression of the wire and adjust if needed.  Roll wire through completely to flatten entire piece.
  3. Anneal the wire if needed, as the wire becomes work hardened after it’s rolled.
  4. Wrap the wire around the ring mandrel, just a bit smaller than the desired size and make a coil. The coil will expand about a ½ size after it is removed from the ring mandrel.
  5. Cut the ring away from the coil using flush cutters and fit the ends together so there is no gap at the opening.
  6. Apply a 2mm sized bit of copper paste solder to the join using a solder pick. Solder on annealing pan with charcoal block. Quench and clean.
  7. Shape on bench block and ring mandrel with a plastic mallet.
  8. Antique and polish ring as desired. Finish the ring in a tumbler if desired.
