Mary Hettmansperger shares ideas for hammering, texturing and coloring metal, plus using eyelets and rivets for cold connections.


Colored pencils and unique surfaces

Materials:
Copper sheeting – 24 gauge
Eyelets – ¼ inch in length – miniature 1/16
Eyelet setter for mini eyelets
Jel Flux
16 gauge wire
Tools:
Hammer - Ball pien
Anvil or bench block
Metal shears
Disc cutter
Dapping block
Torch and pliers
Hand tools
Pliers
Hole punch
Wire cutters
Safety glasses
Steel wool – grade 1 or 2
Dust Mask
Enamels
Sifter
Comet
Green scrubbie
Water and bucket to wash
Rubber gloves

 

Instructions:
Step #1 – Cut shapes for necklace – aprox. 2 inches by 2 inches out of 24 gauge copper sheeting.

Step #2 – Heat the metal – Hammer and texture the shapes of metal.

Step #3 – With gesso, paint the metal - dry

Step #4 – Using prisma color pencils ….color the pieces of metal – spray with a matte workable fixative… let dry and put the piece aside to air dry or place on mug warmer.  Continue the process of layering colored pencils, fixative pencils, fixative… finishing the final layer with a final fixative.

Step #5 – This colored pencil technique can be used with embossing. 

Step #6 – Once the pieces are prepared can then be made into a variety of jewelry.
