There are a variety of tools on the market that are specifically made for cutting thread.

Beading scissors (http://www.beadalon.com/Scissors.asp) are an essential item in the beader's toolbox. Look for sharp, pointy tips that match well at the point.

Squeeze scissors look like tweezers but have scissor blades at the end. They're designed to allow you to hold your stringing needle or strand while cutting with precision and control. They're perfect for cutting knots while re-stringing pearls because you don't have to set the beads down.

A snipper tool is particularly convenient for travel or other times when you just want to toss your beading gear into a bag. The cover protects the blades and the snipper can be used to cut just about any beading thread.

The knot cutter (http://www.beadalon.com/DEconoKnotCutter.asp) looks like a wire cutter but it is specifically designed to cut Silk, Nymo, Leather, Organza and other fibrous stringing materials. The handles have comfort grips, giving them a comfortable feel that's similar to other jewelry making tools.
