A bead reamer is a round file that is used to enlarge, de-burr and round out bead holes. It's important to ream beads that have sharp edges or rough spots inside the holes because these can cause abrasion and breakage of beading wire.

Bead reamers are available in different styles. Very fine-tipped reamers are excellent for pearls, which typically have very small holes.

Some bead reamers come with a variety of tips that you choose based on the diameter of the bead hole size. To use a hand-operated bead reamer, you place the tip in the bead hole and twist it side to side.

A battery-operated reamer works about five times faster than reaming by hand. To use it, submerge a bead and the tip into a small bowl of water, and then ream the hole from both sides of the bead. The water keeps the bead from getting too hot, which protects the reamer tip.
